Re: [RC] suspensory injury - Barbara McCrary

My experiences with suspensory tears (4 horses over the years) suggests a
long lay-up, usually a year. I know the horses go bonkers waiting around
that long, but it seems worth it. We have one of those four horses left and
his last tear was probably ten years ago. He's sound if I don't ride him on
an endurance ride. The last 50 I did on him was about three years ago, and
he turned up a bit off at one vet check, then warmed out of it and was sound
at the trot the rest of the way through the ride. I think, however, it was
the old suspensory acting up, so I have not ridden endurance on him since.
He can still do a brisk 15-mile training ride around home and be OK. Maybe
he could even do a 50, but I didn't want to chance it. His problem is
hyperextension at the trot and a hyper personality. Give your horse time,
and she'll likely be fine. I would concur with the third vet's decision as
the most likely one. And your horse's injury was from an accident, not from
a consistent way of going, as is the case with mine.

Barbara

That's encouraging to us. My husband's Belgian/Thoroughbred tripped and
stumbled really bad last July and according to the ultrasound it was a 65%
tear. She doesn't have the best conformation, but she's an absolutely
teddy
bear. The vet told my husband (no bedside manner) "if you want to ride a
horse again, put this one in the pasture and go get another." He cried all
the way home. It's his first horse that I bought for him as a present when
he was 40. The ultrasound was done by a second vet. The first said just to
giver he a month off. We opted for a third opinion since the two were so
vastly different. The third vet (at a clinic who specializes in this type
of
injury) said that it wasn't necessarily a career-ending injury and just
needed alot of time to heal. His ultrasound was a month after the first
and
he felt it was healing tremendously well. Two months later we went back
for
a third ultrasound and other than the permanent enlargement, he said she
was
healed. He lounged her for about twenty minutes in both directions and
said
clinically and physically he felt she was fine. We've stayed off of her
until this last month and have ridden a couple of miles at a walk, or at
least we tried to walk. All she wanted to do was crowhop, prance sideways
and generally act like a ninny. She seems no worse for wear. We've decided
that in the next couple of weeks we'll take her away from home and ride
her
where she will actually walk instead of wanting to run back to the barn.
Wish us luck. My husband absolutely adores this horse.

:) Jackie

My mule, Miss Scarlett O'Hara tore a suspensory and was off for a full
year and went on to do another 1,000 miles or so without incident.....
