Re: [RC] Seabiscuit - Barbara McCrary

Julie says 1/3 is the rider, so we have to factor in Becky, who is a very
skilled rider and reader of her horses. It may not be so much "chance"
after all.
I was privileged to ride Khazen on Tevis once; he took me through my first
finish. This was before Becky started winning on him just about everywhere.
I remember him as a very well-behaved horse. I rode slowly, probably slower
than I needed to, but I was being very cautious of someone else's horse, and
I simply didn't have a clue how to pace a horse for that ride. I remember
climbing up out of the American River canyon, up the switchbacks, and
offering Khazen the opportunity to stop and rest every second switchback or
so. He looked at me as if he thought I was nuts. Why should he want to
rest, he almost asked me? He was just chugging up out of there at a
purposeful walk and had no need to stop and rest. We arrived at Robie Point
at dawn, nearly 24 hours later, and it was just becoming light. I heard a
rooster in someone's backyard, crowing to the new day, and I thought, "My
God, what have I just done?" It left a very indelible memory.

Becky Hart has told me that her world champion horse Rio has an
exceptionally large heart. And he literally wanted to
win.

At 27 or 28 [I lose track of time] Rio still thinks he should be racing.
Becky uses him for lessons and stuff. I can't remember the numbers but
Rio's heart pumps a very large volumn of blood and is large for his size.
Remember, he is a little horse.....I can find out if you want to know. I am
sure Becky remembers all this stuff.....

For those of you who remember him, Khazen is also being used as a lesson
horse and he is 30+ I think.

Wow, what are the chances of having 2 Hall of Fame horses.....
