Re: [RC] Fat or Carbs - superpat

The best person to ask is Susan Garlinghouse. I can tell you that she will
probably tell you that most horses do not need grain in any abundance, if at
all. A good quality hay, some alfalfa and beet pulp. I think the trend,
nutritionally speaking is in this direction. Most horses can use more fat in
their diets. It is best added in the form of oil, (up to 1 1/2 cups twice a
day for a 1500 lb horse). For my 900 pound horses, I give them 1 cup per day
added to their morning beet pulp slurry (with about 1/2 - 1 cup rice bran
for flavor and added fat) plus their supplements, MSM and depending on their
work loads, a cup or two of Strategy or Complete Advantage. My horse who has
tied up in the past gets 1 cup twice a day. The problem is that some horses
don't like the oil floating on their mash and my tie-up girl would just pick
at her mash and take hours to finally down it all.
A friend turned me on to "Fat Pak" which is a powdered animal fat. It smells
awful and I certainly would not find it appetizing, but it is another way to
add fat. What is even better is a fairly new product made from Vegetable
fat. It smells pretty good and my mare seems to really like it and eats her
mash in one sitting till it is all gone. It is called "Energy Pak" and comes
in 50 pound bags for I think $26. Also a lot cheaper than oil. Once all my
oil is gone, I plan to start feeding this to all my horses.
Our Grange Co-op is where I get it and they are now using the Energy Pak as
the fat source in the feeds they put together at their elevator.
Hope this helps.
Pat

Subject: [RC] Fat or Carbs

Could you please give Ridecampers any updates on whether the high fat
feeding is still what most people are using for endurance horses, or if
there are any problems with the high fat diet that have come up in the
past few years. Also what luck have people had w/carbo loading and/or
supplementation during the ride? One more question - does the high fiber
in beet pulp cause a problem for horses w/ulcers?
                                                          Shelly
