RE: [RC] Liquid Malox or Mylanta - Snodgrass, Bonnie

I suggest if you decide to mix your electrolytes with a human antacid that
you use the planin Mylanta (not the antigas Mylanta) over Maalox. It's
active ingredients are Calcium cabonate and Magnesium Hydroxide. The
aluminum hydroxide in maalox is, well, aluminum. It is not recommended by
doctors for regular use for humans because of the aluminum. The calcium
carbonate in the Mylanta is safe.

Personally I use the Pro-CMC and my mare actually slurps down her
electrolytes. Evidently it really helps cut the burn and taste of the
electrolytes, plus leftovers can be used another day unlike electrolytes
mixed with food like applesauce, yogurt or baby food.

Subject: [RC] Liquid Malox

Here is the ingredients list for liquid Malox as copied
from a website:

**************************************
Malox
Active Ingredients: per teaspoon (5 ml): Aluminum Hydroxide 200mg
(Antacid)(equiv. to dried gel USP), Magnesium Hydroxide 200mg (Antacid),
Simethicone 20mg (Antigas)

Inactive Ingredients: Butylparaben, Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium, Flavor,
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Propylparaben,
Purified Water, Saccharin Sodium, Sorbitol
*****************************

If any of these are "masking agents", Malox would not be
allowed. Maybe a vet can comment on permisability of these
substances. None are listed on the policy PDF from the
AERC website (I just checked) on either list.

I'd heard somewhere (here?) that Malox had something in it
that would not be allowed under the AERC No Drug Rule, but
it wasn't ever definitive one way or the other. Maybe a
ridecamp vet can comment? Thanks,
