Re: [RC] re: loose horses - Howard Bramhall

The sad truth is, at most rides I attend (over 95%) there is always a loose
horse at some point or another during the 3 day week-end. Sometimes it
causes quite a commotion, sometimes nobody notices at all. Depends on the
horse that got loose, who he meets along the way, time of day, level of
aggression the humans, who want to catch him, possess, etc.

I think the best solution is to tie your horse to your trailer,
double-hobbled, surrounded by an electric fence, boarded by a steel panel
one, and complete this with your horse wearing two dog collars that you can
shock the poor creature with at anytime (using a remote control) if he ever
moves in a way you don't like.

And, when you saddle him up and get ready to leave camp come ride day,
you're surprised that he's too afraid to take one step in any direction.
Imagine that!

cya,
Howard

"...I made him get some water on his lips and then he touched
the fence again. Well, I guess that didn't feel so good. ..."

Classic sign of a poor ground. The more I read about hotwire
enclosures for ridecamps, the less I like the idea, and
grounding is one of the big problems. Unless it is being set up
in a permanantly biggy area, any electric fnce requires at least
a 4 - 8 FOOT grounding rod to work consistantly. Having tried
to drive grounding rods more than once, it is not easy to set
them deep enough to provide ground in dry weather. A nail,
spike ot tent-peg just ain't gonna cut it.

When I finally get Idiot Boy to load (another story) and we get
to go camping, he'll be tied... probably hobbled, thrown,
hog-tied, bound, blind-folded and gagged, after reading all the
horse escape horror-stories!
