Re: [RC] [RC] re: hobbling to saddle - Laurie DurginOften people only take away bits and pieces from trainers, sounds like thats what happened to your mare. John Lyons himself says he only uses a round pen for a day or two on unbroke horses. he says if the horse is halter broke, you can use "exercises "(giving to pressure) under halter.I read all the "non-resistance trainers "and went to two of their seiminars and saw PP demo. I had no desire to climb on my trailer roof or jump picnic tables or ride without headgear. But there is a thread that runs thru many of them and with common sense and the old "if this doesn't work , try something else" I think we can learn alot.I think the most important threads were :"what is the horses' behavior telling you, be patient, break things down into little steps, repetition, positive reinforcement, consistancy, build trust, make them do something, if what you are doing doesn't work, don't keep repeating it try something different, we all make mistakes and horses are very forgiving. Not all horses are the same." The three I have I have to adjust for. Rascal is just as he is named. He occasionally wants thinks he should decide things, he anticipates, You can't force him if he is afraid, he will fight, but he will follow me anywhere. He is light on the bit, and he can run sideways thru it.He loves to go, but will act like a plug if his friends along. Honey is reactive, sensitive and needs to trust you, used to bolt from fear , and doesn't trust strangers readily, though she is friendly. She is smart and usually wants to please with a bit of a stubborn or lazy streak sometimes. You have to work to keep her attention when she is excited. Scout's laid back, inquisitive and things rarely disturb him. He is very gentle and nonreactive and new experinces are ok by him.He will let you do anything to him with hardly a glance(hhhmmm could be his mother was an 18 yr old Appen. QH.and he was with her 18 months)The arab part just gave him his brains and good looks. So I think we can learn alot from trainers and others and keeping our minds open. At the very least we can learn what doesn't work. I usually ask or read for information, then ignore what I think doesn't fit.But I have disregarded somethings only to end up trying them as a last resort.I try to do things that will make me and my horse safe in most situations and enjoy them......Laurie and Rascal, Scout and Honey oh, yeah and Champ From: "Stephanie E Caldwell" <sec@xxxxxxxx> To: "Sullivan" <greymare@xxxxxxx>, "Ridecamp" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [RC] re: hobbling to saddle Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2003 18:48:41 -0400 _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
