FW: [RC] Orphaned Foal - Donna J. Coss-----Original Message----- From: Donna J. Coss [mailto:coss@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2003 10:33 AM To: Ksmusts@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [RC] Orphaned Foal I have raised two orphan foals, one orphaned from birth and the other at 5 weeks. Choose a milk replacer made just for orphan horses, I found out that Buckeye brand was the best, followed by LandOLakes. Feed out of a pan, about 3 inches deep, when you first begin, so that the colt does not inhale through the nose and cause inhalation pneumonia--this is very important! Mix the milk replacer with water and mix well with a wire whisk. Buckeye also makes a replacer pellet that you can feed in addition to the milk. Sometime you need to watch for ulcers--if the foal chews or grinds its teeth, this is a sign and consult with your Vet. The new born foal should not be a problem, but the 5 week baby is used to mommy, so is more difficult to wean to the pan of milk. If you have questions, please e-mail me privately. The baby will be on milk until about 3 months old. You will know when to wean him--when he eats the pellets, provided they are made for baby horses. www.shagya-arabian.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kristene Smuts" <Ksmuts@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2003 3:12 AM =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
