[RC] How soon for first 50 - Carolyn Burgess

Theresa:

Loved your list of things to prep for a 50.  I am getting ready for mine and my horses first 50 and wasn't sure if he would be ready.  We had a bad winter in Massachusetts and neither of us had been out since December.  We are back riding and here is my schedule to get ready for our first 50 (which sound good based on your parameters):

Between last week and May 17th riding 2 - 3 times a week, 10 - 15 miles each ride, maybe more on weekends.  I have scheduled to do a 25 and 30 mile CTR in May, I have a 2 day 50 in early June, a 25 in mid-June leading up to the 50 at the end of June.  This is being done by an 11 y.o. in his second season of competing.  He has 75 miles of competition under his belt (3 - 25's) from last year, and he has hundreds of training miles.  He is a Standardbred pacer who raced until he was 9, and their training is being jogged 7 miles a day during racing season (7 months a year).  He came out of racing totally sound, no injuries.

I was concerned that he wouldn't be able to do this this soon, but it sounds like he is ready.  Anyone elses input would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Carolyn Burgess
