[RC] Strangles - CMNewell

Is it so that once a horse has had strangles it cannot get in again?

No. It is not true. There is usually fairly soild immunity for a year or so, and may be some immunity which persists longer, which could make the infection milder.

Also like to know how often is a mare receptive (for breeding)

Mares are seasonally polyestrous long day brreders, which means that starting in spring, and continuing throguh summer and into early fall, they have estrus cycles which are approximately 21-28 days in length, and are sexually receptive for 3-5 days during the cycle. YMMV. Peak fertility is in early summer.
