Re: [RC] jWest Nile Vaccine, where? - Jim Simpson

I attended a seminar that was put on by a Fort Dodge vet. What he said was
that the FDA will not allow them to recommend 2 doses a year, but the major
equine universities are. He was pulling all of his information on vaccine
coverage out of a study done on 7500 horses by the Universities of Florida
and Kentucky. The study give incident rates, mortality rates and
recommended vaccination schedules. The info was not necessarily the same
that you (or my vet) will get if they call Fort Dodge directly. In short
they what was said. Vaccinate pregnant mares 30 to 45 days prior to
foaling then the foal (from a fully vaccinated mare) at 4 to 5 months. The
consensus from the studies (not officially Ft Dodge) was spring and Aug.
They do feel that the foals will carry over the mare's immunity. They also
feel that the incidence of side effects is similar to that from the sleeping
sickness vaccine.

The Minnesota Dept of Health is tracking all reported cases by location.
You can find the page by going to their data bases. The highest rates of
occurrence is falling under the major flight paths for the migratory birds.
They are still saying the best precautions are vaccinating and getting rid
of standing water around barns. They did say there are some type of fish
you can even put in the stock tanks that eat misqueto larve. I haven't
quite gotten that one figured out yet.

We just had a conference with our MN vet last week. After we got done
with
the mare with the broken coffin bone (It is healing nicely), we talked
about W Nile. The consensus is that the first year 3 shots are necessary
(original, booster, third in august). The second year April, and July or
August. Most of the cases show up in August and Sept here.
