Re: [RC] Breeding issues, questions, and what if's? - Stephanie E CaldwellIf she foaled yesterday, retained the afterbirth, and still hasn't passed it by now, it doesn't matter about her spine because she will die anyway from infection. The vet flushed her uterus out and finally removed it around 9pm tonight. That will cause infection? He wasn't too awful worried about her retaining it, but we live in the land of country vets... Love them, but they're not as great as they could be. Sounds to me like your neighbor didn't have the mare in a safe place to foal and wasn't prepared to deal with retained afterbirth. Any fence that a mare could get through was definitely not foaling safe. Vets will provide breeders with oxytocin to deal with retained afterbirths. Both of these things are simple to deal with and are so basic that no mare needs to suffer because of such things. Well... he's had horses for around 40years. His fences are 2x6's with 6x6's for the posts. The bottom board is about 6" off the ground. He's the safest man I know with his mares and babies. I know of no horses getting hurt on his barn in the years I've know him. But, he's country as our vets are, and people don't believe in prevenitive medicine around here. They have no idea how this mare went through the fence, and I couldn't figure it out either. She's a big mare, but to push through a pole and several slats of fence... I just don't see how she broke that with her legs/back and didn't put a scratch on her hide!
