[RC] BOD Motions - Costs Need to Be Considered - Stagg_NewmanIn responding to what we would like to see the BOD do we should also indicate our willingness to have the BOD spend AERC money and/or office time which translate into money on an issue. I use the question of the AERC list serve as one example. Note that their are other proposals on the table that involved potentially far more substantive expenditures of money for which similar thinking needs to be none The question on the list serve the BOD must consider is NOT whether the membership wants and would be well served by an AERC members only list serve or not but rather: 'Do AERC members want and would they be well served if AERC spends X amount of money up-front to create a AERC members only list serve and Y amount of money and/or office time, which translates into money in terms of loaded salary, in annual maintenance of the list serve?' (Mike Maul can you supply X and Y?) And then one has to ask whether this is a moderated list (more time for somebody), whether the list will allow advertizers to send email about products and if so for free or for a fee, etc. etc. Said another way how do members want their dues, etc. spent. The answer to the question above is probably different is there is no cost, $0.25 per member per year, $10.00 per member per year, and $100 per member per year. Note that I personally do not have strong feelings one way or another on the above issue without knowing more about the costs, particularly the recurring costs and what will be offered. I am just using this as an example of the type of thinking that needs to be done. As somebody who is about to return to the BOD after a several year absence the input from membership is vital to us.
