[RC] More LD thoughts - sharp penny

To my way of thinking LD is just a mileage division under
the endurance umbrella. Simply put, wether you race or not
is your choice. There are many 50 and 100 milers, who for
one reason or another, choose not to race. We don't
penalize those that do race in these divisions by
withholding place standings and BC's ...why should LD's be
any different? Let the short distance sprinters have a
place to showcase their talents...they pay for the right to
compete and support AERC with dues ect just as the higher
    mileage riders do.

For the truly newbies, I see several rides in CT region
offering 15 mile intro rides. What a great idea...these are
not sanctioned by AERC..people get the feel of what a ride
is all about complete with vet checks and get to take home
a completion "prize" to reward their efforts. What a way to
get someone hooked!!! Also nice if you have a "new to
endurance" horse that you don't want to do/or isn't ready
for 25 miles, but you want to give them the endurance
experience, complete with a start, vet checks , a finish
and everything these entail. At the same time putting some
extra money into the ride at very little extra cost..ie.
the vets are already there, the trail is already marked,
completion prizes are bought in bulk so an extra 20 or so
is not an big expense and so forth. Sure it takes a little
pre planning so the intro riders are out of the way and vet
    out during slack times.

    Regards,
    Penny
