Re: What about blankets when trailering?

Depends on time of year! In the summer, heck no. In the winter, in
Northern California, only in very cold weather, or long hauls, or if they
are damp and need some sort of cooler. BUT, I have to admit, my trailer is
an aluminum stock, with open sides at the top, with two good air slats.
Since horses are BIG animals, generate a lot of heat, and are livestock-it
is much more important that they get fresh air with trailering. Here comes
my rant on that! I can't still believe how many people up here haul around
with trailers with little drop down windows, solid back doors, and those
tiny roof vents that face BACKWARDS! Can someone explain to me how they can
get air in the trailer going down the road....if they open backwards???  So;
it does depend on the time of year and the type of ventilation in the
trailer, as far as if you blanket.
Personally, I would rather have the option of all the fresh air I can
get...if too much, always can add a blanket. Since my triailer is so open
at top, I generally put fly masks on-to keep hay and chaff from blowing into
their faces from the hay bags.

As far as blanketing at home.....my horses all have a big run in shelter or
box stalls in wet weather. If it is not raining, they are shut out of the
stalls, since they poop in there. When it rains, they stand in the stalls,
and last year we did blanket my daughters horse, who is a hard keeper and
got cold, just standing. But, heck, I understand, in some parts of Idaho,
horses are turned out in the snow all winter, no shelter and do just fine.
