Re: RC: Problem with stall walking mare

Prefer pasture myself but in winter months, barn alfalfa is many times
the only thing available or even affordable (@$150-160/ton!). Forage
mix in these parts (central CA) is getting increasingly harder to find
now that everyone and their cousin has decided to become a vintner. At
this point I am beginning to hate wine--- margaritas are FAR more
healthy for you with that vitamin C ;-)
Oat hay (which my horses use as bedding most times) can go up to over
$160/ton and there is so much waste! I've been afraid to use pellets or
cubes due to horror stories and the fact that my horses will chew fences
if they can't chew hay or pasture. I know that regular alfalfa during
the growing season is so high in calcium that horses get leg cramps---
Hal did and that is why we had to find and pay the high price for forage
mixes for him. What do you other Californians use when pasture is gone
late summer/winter?
