You can build an insulated box around your trough...also...put some kind of
cover on it so a space just big enough to allow them to drink is left(very
important!)...the box can be built out of plywood with sawdust or regular
fiberglass insulation filling the space between the plywood and the
trough...works fine until you start getting into the below zero
readings...There's another kind of a system that works no matter how cold it
gets...it's a double walled water trough that is insulated by heated air
from underground...A very deep hole is dug and a 6 inch pipe goes into the
hole up to the bottom of the trough...the warmed air in the pipe fills the
space between the two walls of the trough..I was a skeptic but after weeks
of 30 below with wind and the water didn't freeze..I became a believer!
