Where does the overflow water go?  Do you wind up with slick ice around the 
trough?  Although our nights get down below freezing here, our days 
generally are above freezing - even if I wanted to lose that water (our 
well is a very low producer) I'd have a real muddy swamp next to the trough 
that way.
