This is not endurance related--but is an anecdote to comment on size, etc.
Several years ago I attended a donkey and mule show and watched the mules'
jumping contest. Now, this contest is based on actual activities expected
of mules who are ridden on night hunts (for raccoon). When the rider comes
to a fence, he dismounts, throws a blanket over the (usually barbed wire)
fence, shines a light on the blanket, and the mule is expected to jump the
fence, in-hand.
So, at the competition, a 10-foot square in drawn with chalk, and
from that square, the mule is expected to jump over the pole-vaulters' type
jump--in-hand. At the competition I watched, there were two competitors
who stood out -- a 16+ hand big mule, and a little fellow around 12-13
hands, if that. Of course you know by now the little fellow outjumped the
big one---he jumped a jump taller than the head of the big guy - and was
eager for more.
