To give you an experienced but untechnical answer:

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...

Every little thing you don't see or ignore within
a few hours of a race will come back to haunt you.

By all means, use ice boots and poultices.  They
cannot hurt (if done properly) and your horse will
not only feel better, but will heal better.
