Horse slaughter and Choices

Fortunately, the few bad instances have been far outweighed by the good
instances in our history of selling horses that we have raised or handled
for marketing ... the smiles on the faces of new horse owners is an
incredible reward for the time, effort and expense it takes to be in the
horse business as a breeder ... to share the joy of equine companionship
with folks who would not have that particular experience without the horses
that we raise is an rich payback, more than terms of dollars ... it's not
financially feasible for us to sell horses for $1 though and because we
breed horses to sell (important note to the IRS: it's not a hobby!!), we
deal with buyers who will hopefully take good care of their investment ...
if we don't continue to responsibly breed good individuals, from where will
the prospects come for riding, showing, companionship? ... thank goodness
that the heartwarming stories far outweight the tragic ones or we could
never sell another horse.

Carrie, you remind me of why I have dismissed ever being a horse breeder --
to not be able to control what happens to the wonderful horses that I breed
would be horrible. And I'm SURE that you (and most breeders) always mean
to sell to good homes, but sometimes it just doesn't happen, and I can't
imagine how hard that must be. Yes, life does deal us undesirable hands,
at times -- I just think that there are always options. . .
