[RC] pulse question - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Cristin cetreaster@xxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I have a four-year-old mustang mare who I've raised since 9 months old with the goal of endurance riding. I finally started conditioning her for 25's about two months ago and she is doing great. By all accounts she is in great shape (by 25 standards, at least). I've been judging her condition by her overall attitude and how quickly her pulse and respirations recover to their resting rates, and all has been going well. So here's the problem: My mare's resting pulse rate, laying down snoozing, is 56. Yes, fifty-six. I know normal is in the 30's. I have listened to her heart in every calm situation I can come up with since we started conditioning, and it is always between 56 and 60. The only pulse reading I have from before this spring is from last March (2004) when she had a minor colic episode. The vet came out and her pulse was 48. So, does anyone have any ideas why her resting rate would be so high now?? Will further conditioning lower it? I really appreciate any ideas on this. I'm worried that we won't even be allowed to start with her resting rate so high, even though it appears to be normal for her.
