A handicap in our sport is something that limits performance, Heidi. As
leg-injuries does. A horse that eats when it wants, and not, if something is
there, don't limits performance any. You have some statistics against you with a
body-score 4 instead of 5 at rides like the Tevis-cup, thats all. Good if you
have a horse with a 5. No reason to worry if you have a 4. nothing where the
individual is concerned. Some horses quits even their belly is full, too. At
first, it's a mental thing to reach the finish-line. As with humans.
I personally prefer horses that always go, rather than always want to eat. Both
is difficult to reach at a time.
Maybe some people have the exaggerated requirements, that can be. Especially if
the horses of others are concerned. Something we have to live with in Endurance -
like it or not. That's why hard facts, and measurements are needed - to precise
individual judgements.
Nature doesn't fit some perfect form 100%. A little bit more here, a little bit
less there. It's only a matter how carefull one looks. How boring if all horses
would be the same...

regards,
Frank
