Re: Re: Walk the walk

Dear Steve and Joan,

Where I live, (Southern Oregon) we are fortunate to have several wonderful,
knowledgeable, talented veterinarians from which to choose. A couple of
them do ride (one does ride and tie) but to my knowledge, the others do not
ride. Another makes it a point to read, seek discussion with others in the
field and in general to educate himself with particular reference to the
endurance horse. When I have a problem with one of my horses, I feel very
comfortable calling any one of several vets for help. My selection criteria
is based on their knowledge and skill (and bedside manner) and I do not care
a wit whether they ride or have ever ridden, a trail, arena or endurance. I
for one would like to see officials and judges learning about the sport and
it's attendant problems and I do not think that riding two 25 milers, or
fifty or 100, will make them a better judge or a better vet. Maybe we
should try to select criteria that is relevant to their particular field and
the skills that bring them to the table in the first place.
