Horsemanship has to play a part in this game somewhere--and preparation
should be a given--but probably isn't.
Still, many injuries occur from fatigue and subsequent missteps and added
biomechanical stressors. If you can reduce fatigue, you're doing the horse a
favor, even in the face of poor preparation. Carbohydrate suopplementation is
not the same as injecting a horse with adrenaline or caffeine. It simply
reduces fatigue.
You're not alone in your fear of the "new" and newfangled. I'm sure you'll
have plenty of support. New motto proposal: To Finish, au naturel, is to win.
Now all we have to do is figure out what IS natural. Maybe finishing itself
isn't natural for the horse. Just to find out, I suggest an experiment.
Halfway through a ride, see if you can get your horse to indicate whether
he'd rather graze on the green grass or saddle up and get back onto the
trail..
