Well the hard part is getting the blood sample. I find that the horses
don't bleed easily <G>. (yet if they get a scratch on them blood spurts
everywhere) The annoying thing is that you try to use a variety of spots
to stick them, then when the vet checks them over they'll react in a way
that the vet thinks something might be wrong, but it isn't - they just
think they are going to get poked (oooh, he picked up his hind leg
something must be wrong). I haven't been doing it lately so they aren't
expecting anything. Ahead of time, I try to shave little spots that way I
know where they have been poked and that way they aren't getting it in the
same spot everytime. I had the best results with the hind leg, high
up. Blood drops off into the test strip easily from there. (everybody
just thinks my horses get little scratches all over them-haha)

I can bring the kit to DVE if anybody wants to use it. What is scary, is
to use it on yourself and realize that "oh @#$% I'm not taking care of
myself like I should be". Horse is fine, the rider needs help......

Would love to hear how others are handling doing this, and how the new
types of glucometers work. Would be great to get readings without having
to have a blood sample.

Odd tho, usually if my horses hang out for a few days at home just eating
hay their glucose levels will be less than they are after they finish a
ride, even if they are ridden fast. Loading them up with grain will easily
double the readings. I probably should put this info all together into a
spreadsheet. Right now it's on cards, napkins, maps - whatever I had to
write on at the time. Lot of it is in memory too, which....
well...probably isn't a real good place for it.
