Re: RC: Convention Trade Show

An eye for an eye? >g<

O.K. I probably rate towards to top of all time cheapskates, but here's
my experience on the $5 fee.

I have been to two conventions. The first, in Atlanta, because when the
blizzard hit somebody who had pre-paid gave me their admission and I was
willing to fight my way through the blizzard of the century to get a free
admission.

The second was in Kentucky. Since there was no blizzard, I got 2 friends
to split the gas and we drove 4 1/2 hours JUST to go in the tradeshow. I
would have had no problem with paying $5 to enter. Actually, I felt like
I had snuck in when people kept asking if I was going to sit in on this
meeting and that and I had to admit I hadn't paid for the convention.

If I recall what I read in Doyle's now deleted post, he did NOT say, "we
need $2500 to pay for the hall" He insinuated that AERC was offering a
valuable service to the public, worth paying for. He simply said, "we
paid $2500 for the hall". I can't really picture "walk ons" to be a big
part of the convention crowd. I would expect more of those who attend
only the trade show to be like my two friends and I, just wanting to be a
part of the event, without paying the full entry. $5 is O.K. for that.
Maybe they did it to keep those who pay the full amount from feeling like
they get so little for their money.

Either way is O.K. for me. I finally started working a *real* job and
the next time it's in the East, I'll pay the full amount and stop peaking
in the doors wistfully.
