Re: RC: nutrition in foundered horse

Anita,

Do you know why the friend's horse foundered? My oldest Arab, Farafix (26
yrs) started foundering 8-9 yrs ago on the spring grass. By restricting his
access to the rich grass, we can prevent re-occurrences. I was lucky to
catch it early enough --- he went on to have his best yrs at CTR's when he
was 19 & 20, and he is still sound & frisky. However, I don't feed him high
protein grain --- in the winter he gets 2-3 small coffee cans of 12% grain,
plus timothy or orchard grass hay, so the total protein content is below 12%.
I never had the grass tested, but a lab told me that grass can test as high
as 21% protein in my area.
A hay only diet can be low in protein (depending on the type of hay), so
depending on how much of the 14% protein is fed, the total protein content
may not be too high.

Good luck,
Nancy
Md
