I read a futuristic article on endurance riding awhile ago - I forget where. 
  One thing was wiring the horse up so there was constant feedback from the 
horse into a computer so that all systems could be monitered as he went 
along. Another was the electronic timing check in.  It sounds like the 
future is already here!
