Riding W/ running martingales

Hi Ridecampers!

In some western disciplines, and some horses, it is used only very early on
as a training aid, eg cutting and reining and working cow horse. However,
you do NOT see these used in high end competition. It's not allowed. (Barrel
racing has an off-again on again love affair with tie downs, etc.)

When these horses are at the bridle-horse stage, they are considered
'finished' and fully broke. For tune ups, they go back to a snaffle. A
martingale would not be useful...it interferes with many of the
movements...spins, rollbacks, slides and all the neat cutting movements
that are part and parcel of these sports.

Just watch America's Horse on TV.

Just to clarify where and when the martingale is used...at the start of the
process, not at the middle or end, or continuosly.

Having ridden a western broke horse in LDs, what a joy! Simple equipment
and a broke horse. Can't get any better than that! No muss, no fuss.

Cheers!

Monika, Koko (working on the mom's brain still) and Ripp (what brains, mom?)
