Slightly different makeup of feed, slightly different digestion in each horse,
etc. A critter's innards don't work just the same as those of next critter,
any more than their noses are the same shape or their ears are the same
length or anything else. Your metabolic processes are just as individual as
your face. (Which is why I look at pedigrees of prospects, by the way--to try
to predict traits OTHER than what I can see with my eyes on the outside.)
Also, there is a WIDE variety between feeds, even the same stuff... My
alfalfa may be different from yours, which is different from Susan's which is
different from Bob's, and likewise everything else we feed.
