Hi Pam,

No, we don't use "keepers" on our easyboots. We also cut the heals
down to keep them from rubbing. It sound to me like your easyboots 
might possibly be too big or you have not adjusted the cable tight
enough, there are different ways to adjust the cable to tighten the
boot. On both our mares we adjust the cable differently, but I'm no
expert on easyboots just asked a lot of questions. The easyfoam is not
hard to use just a little messy. We have never used the keepers as we
have not needed them. Hope this helps. If you need some more information
