Butt numbers

Have noticed with my mare that the week after a ride, the number is
fading on its own.  She loves to roll so I think the dirt must dry the
grease (or whatever it is) & it starts to flake or peel off.  

Haven't done it yet, but maybe rubbing some dirt on there, brush, then
wash?
