Re: cost of coggins

I'm afraid generalizations such as "here, in Tx" can be a bit confusing.
As with anything else, things are not the same in all locations. I can
get a coggins AND health certificate for $20 or I can pay as much as $50
for one rush coggins! It all depends on the vet and location. (BTW,
I'm in Texas in the north Houston area.) Sometimes I use a vet 30
minutes down the road and other times I haul 2 hours away to an equine
specialist --- rates vary quite a bit.

I also believe the laws changed in Jan of this year regarding negative
coggins and that they are now required for auction animals. In fact, I
believe now that at any organized gathering of equines, each animal must
have a negative coggins. I'm sure that if I'm mistaken, someone will
jump in here. I do know some folks who bought a horse with a negative
coggins (the test was about 8-l0 months old) and had a new one pulled
when they got her home. The new one showed up positive! Changes can
occur at any time in the animal's status.
