I would like to add to all the great advice for first time volunteers already posted to this list.

Learn as much as you can about the ride.  You will be surprised how many questions you will be asked.  How far to the next vet check?  How far to the next water?  What color ribbons are 25 milers supposed to follow?  What do I do with this loose horse?  Just to name a few.  The more helpful you can be the better the management looks.
