feed at night?

On any length endurance ride I get up around 1:30 -- 2 am. to give my
horse more hay, check his water, etc. In fact, any time I go
horsecamping I do the same thing. Keeps them happy, and keeps food in
the gut for those good sounds! The plus side is that in the a.m. I
need not worry about how much breakfast he's had time to eat because I
know he's been stoking it in all night long. I don't feed any grain or
concentrates in the morning. Carrots, yes, anytime. At lunch, it's
hay, some grain and bran with lots of water mixed in, carrots, apples,
etc. and after he's taken in enough water, applesauce w/electrolytes.
About night lights on the trail -- light stick on the breast collar is
my favorite, but I always keep a flashlight handy for the inevitable
black hole of calcutta -- with sounds of rushing water thrown in --
wh-wh-wh-where are we going?? (;-), Connie B.
