I got an in tank heater that fit into the drain hole AWAY FROM THE HORSES!!!
I leave it plugged in all winter with NO danger (unless I let the tub run
dry) of any kind.

I think I have the same heater Teddy must have. My tank is the charcoal gray
color, I believe made by Rubbermaid (110 gal). The heater I got from State
Line Tack catalog. It's on it's fourth year and in great shape. Very
safe.... I can rest at night. I have the tank backed up to a fence line with
the cord coming through the last board, AWAY from reach of curious horse
teeth. The heater has a thermostat and maintains the water at a steady 50
degrees.
