water tank heaters

I thought I'd send in this bit because most of us now have our tank
heaters plugged in. I heard the saddest thing, and perhaps there's
someone out there who knows more details because I heard it second hand,
but there was a barn fire at a barn in Denver last week in which 12
horses died. They think it may have been caused by a tank heater cord
that a horse has been playing with or chewing on which caused a spark
and subsequently the fire. People tried to lead the horses out into the
aisleway but they were too frightened and every horse in there died of
smoke inhalation. . . ugh. I know this is entirely possible as we had a
horse who bit his tongue in half when he bit the cord and got an
electric shock from the wire. (he bit through everything but the artery
and the vet had to amputate - believe it or not, he eats just fine with
his stump!)

Please everybody be sure your heater wires are cased in flexible conduit
or covered so we don't harm our curious equine friends!
