My favorite solution for lead rope on the trail is climbing rope made
into reins. Go to your local backpacking store and ask to look at their
selection of demo ropes. They are not allowed to sell these to you for
climbing, however, you can usually talk them into selling them to you
once you explain you'll be using the rope for reins. I bought a 12'
section for about $2.00. It washes up great...gets softer with use and
washing.

Simply attach your favorite rein snaps with a lightweight brass rope
clamp. easy. cheap. functional. effective.
