[endurance] leadropes on the trail

I like to have a lead with me on the trail for...whatever...I'm always in a
quandry tho on the best way to carry it. It seems like it swings alot if I
attach it to his halter and tie around his neck, there doesn't seem to be a
good place on the saddle, I've even tried putting it around my waist - but
with fanny pack that gets awfully bulky :->.

Also do you use a particular rope for your trail lead? Or just a basic
cotton lead? Cotton gets awfully heavy when wet....

Suggestions?
