Re: [RC] World Records? - GAHR - Sharon Levasseur

I'm late to the party so if someone already said this I apologize.

There's a wonderful book that details the history of the GAHR, which I was lucky enough to be able to borrow from a friend. It completely blew my tiny little mind! Tom et al are my HEROES.

I think maybe you can order a copy by calling the AERC office??? Tom, do you know?

Tammy, You asked abdout the record of the "Longest Endurance ride on one horse". That would have to quantify if there was any Vet Control. To my knowledge the longest would have to be the Great American Horse Race in 1976. We had damn good Vets. Drs. Kerry Ridgeway and Dave Nicholson were at the start in Frankfort, NY and left in St. Josephs, Mo. according to the rider meeting tapes left by Eva Taylor because of the Ride Management which did not fulfill its obligation and started on the Pony Express and the XP rides of today. Most of you probably never heard of or even knew Drs. Bruce Branscomb or Homer Webb who were with us at the finish. All one has to do is look at the AERC Hall of Fame and see that in 1977 Bruce was inducted as the first Vet in the HOF.

The GAHR was 'supposed' to be 3200 miles but was in reality a tad under 2,000, because of the RM fiasco a riders committee was set up to run the race and fisticuffs was used to run the last one out of camp. The originator, Randy Scheiding was a dreamer and found he was in over his head. He was not a crook and his intentions were pure and he put the $50,000 purse in an escrow account in Sacramento and said.."if you want this purse money then bring the GAHR to the finish line"

There were 9 of us that finished that started w/ one horse tho the rules stated you could have 2.

I guess if there is a record to one person it should be to the one that finished highest in the standings and that is...

Sam Garner 8th place
Theodore, Alabama
Arabian Stallion Bogams Dude

a side note about Dude, Sam trained him to pull a plow

Francis Arnaud 23rd place
Paris, France
12 yo Arabian Mare Wassana

Anne Babbott 27th place
Shelburne, Vermont
Mule Gelding The Deacon (owned by Virl Norton)

Tom Sites 28th place
still from Luray, Va.
Grade (an oletimer called him a Sabine but he came from the livestock auction) Jose Dante 9yo gelding

Ted Allegri 34th place
Moscow, Idaho
Arabian/Quarter Gelding Monte

Theresa Muller 39th place
Sainte Suzanne, France
Quarterhose Mare 15 yo

Sharon Francis 42nd place
Joliet, Illinois
Palamino Mare 6 yo Playboys Bunny

Mary Ann Stewart 46th place
Poway, California
Arabian Gelding

Dan Daley 50th place
Galway, New York
Appaloosa Gelding Scisor Snow Cloud

So Tammy, thats my take on what i know. If there are others that are longer w/ Vet control i would be interested to know.
