Re: [RC] Lucerne Hay and Laminitis - steelsidedown

AFA & BWFA newsletters, American Farriers Journal, "The Horse" magazine.

It does not indicate specific bloodline, like per say Impressive and HYPP. It
indicates a genetic link, horses in family groupings are more likely to have an
actual founder episode if exposed to an irritant. They are working from the
common knowledge that you can do everything wrong to some horses and never
expierence a founder, and everything right with others and they still founder.
Also research is seeming to suggest horses that founder in their early lives,
develop cushings later in life - and there is a possible link there.

Again, all in the research and information gathering phase, nothing in concrete
yet.

It hit a nerve with me, as my foundered mare has two foundered brothers... all
three live in different states, happened to each at different ages, for
different reasons. I owned the dam, she died at 31 without a hint of a
problem. So in my case it rings true.... of course the vast majority of horses
we aren't able to track "family".

There has been much research lately on founder horses having a genetic

barn share bloodlines?

Jen, do you know where to access research that identifies particular
bloodlines as being susceptible to laminitis?
