RE: [RC] Horse water thawed w/out electric - Chrystal Woodhouse - Ranelle Rubin

While I realize if the power goes out, it makes no difference, I use the Rubbermaid tank with the drain plug heater. I have a whole drilled in the wall behind the tank so my *read* "nosy" Arab can't mess with the cord. I then have an inline GFI (easy to obtain at Home Depot) and a big ornage contractor's extension to the garage. I placed the tank close to the hose bib (the kind that drains back down into the ground so it can't freeze). I have a short hose that spends the summer in my horse trailer for camping (about 10ft). Each night I top off the tank and then hang the hose back up so it completely drains.

Twice a day when I feed, I look at the GFI light to be sure it is still on, and if the power blinks, I go out and reset it. So far, even the goldfish are surviving..and we have had -15 degrees a couple nights..no loss of power yet though..so that will be the trick..guess I will have to boil snow and thaw out the tank that way..and oh..replace the 12 cent goldfish.:)

This is my second winter in the high desert (just south of Reno)..horses are drinking lots!

I'm getting a crash course in COLD weather ( well -12)  I'm used to cold being anything 20 to 30 degrees then We bought a place in the high desert and last week we had a run of negative weather of course I didn't have troth heaters. The entire water troth was frozen solid!! then our pipes froze so I had to find an empty troth and go to a neighbor's to fill it just to water the critters. Needless to say our hose is curled up in our utility room now as well :-) although I plan to pick up some heaters I am very interested in some other means to help keep the ice away as well

"if you can leave your hoses outside after October"

I had to really laugh at this one...I'm in Wyoming and my horses are outside all winter, even when it's 18 below 0 like it was last week :)
