Re: [RC] Wrapping Legs - Elizabeth Walker

My poultice wrap is very close to yours - but I use the Sore-No-More wipes
instead of newspaper. I love Sore-No-More! I have the liniment, poultice clay
and wipes. (And one bottle of liniment by my bedside... ) I wet the leg with
the liniment, then smooth on the clay, then the wipe goes on over the clay in
place of the newspaper. Then wrap with no-bows and standing wrap. Like you, I
will normally leave it on overnight.

I also came from a racing background and do wrap legs after a ride if I feel
any heat or stress. For horses that tend to naturally stock up, like my boy
Blue, I definitely wrap even if I don't feel heat. I'm also a big proponent
of icing after a ride and during vet checks for the longer distances. For
wrapping I use either Sore-No-More liniment with Arnica in it or a poultice.
Arnica, which I also use on myself, is absolutely the best herbal remedy for
bruising and inflammation that I have ever used. When I use a poultice I
never use plastic wrap as it will hold the heat in. The whole idea of a
poultice is as the clay dries it draws the heat out with it. First I wet the
leg (sometimes I use the Sore-No-More to wet the leg) then smooth the
poultice on then wrap with damp newspaper then a no bow wrap and bandage. If
it is hot outside and I'm worried about the wraps holding in too much heat I
will take them off after a few hours but leave the newspaper and poultice on
until it dries. Blue's legs will usually be tight by morning as opposed to
big as fence posts if I don't wrap so I know it works well.
