[RC] conditioning the older horse...? - Stephanie Wind

I have a mare, Swiss, that is 17 years old, going on 18 (1992 model). She is in excellent condition and has been ridden all over the mountains in CO, but never more than about 30 miles or so at any given time. She had several years off riding completely and had 2 foals, 1 in 2008 and 1 in 2009. In August, after her 2009 filly was weaned, she was ridden 3 times (about 15 miles or so per ride), September she had 2 rides, and then early October we did 25 miles at a ride in the mountains here in CO. She finished strong and healthy and happy. I took her riding again yesterday, just a 5 mile loop, but she was like trying to hold back a freight train! I LOVE riding this mare and would like to condition her and possibly compete in some 50s in 2010, but I wonder if her age may be a limiting factor... Has anyone out there ever STARTED a horse's endurance career that old?

Stephanie
