Subject: AERC membership and Trails

Dear All,

Our sport requires a specific combination of Ride Managers, Veterinarians, Riders, Horses and . . . Trails.

Like my favorite preacher who used to remind us of our tithes only once a year, I'm only going to do this once a year--remind you to add whatever you can afford to the Trails Grants fund when you renew your membership this year.  Be sure to specify when you send in your check.

Your Trails and Land Management Committee is responsible for Trail Master classes (coordinator Monica Chapman), State Trails Advocates (coordinator Chris Eickleberry) and Trails Grants (coordinator Lucy Bagot with Gail Williams to soon take over).

Trail Masters go through training and build and maintain our trails all across this country.  Despite the hassle of taking the class, I have never met anyone who regretted it.  Trail Masters also work hard to develop and maintain good working relationships with land managers everywhere.

State Trails Advocates keep us informed of trails problems and issues in each of the states where we have rides.

The Trails Grants fund consists of donations from you--AERC members.  This money is provided to build trails and trailhead facilities for our rides after a long selection and screening process.  The Trails Committee and the AERC Board of Directors work hard to be good stewards of this money and make certain that it goes only to worthwhile projects that will benefit AERC rides.

All of these activities are documented in the Trails Post articles in Endurance News.

With the current recession, AERC has cut its budget in all areas--including Trails.  Please keep in mind this essential aspect of our sport when you renew your membership.

Best to all,

Michael Campbell, Chair, Trails and Land Management Committee, AERC
