[RC] Knee Pain - Bruce Weary DC

Hi Christina--
Your description of your knee pain brings up at least three possibilities. The IT band does run past the knee and can cause
pain, but it's not usually as excruciating as you describe. It sounds more like possible pain coming from the lateral
cartilage. It would hurt with loading, feel better with unloading, and would be painful on a deep knee bend. Instead of looking
for medical advice from us hayseeds with manure on our boots, you are better off getting a proper orthopedic diagnosis as to which
tissue is causing the pain, as that will steer your treatment and prognosis. In the meantime, I would try vigorous local massage
exactly on the tender spot for about 3-4 minutes, followed by ice, and see if that helps. If it keeps coming back, you could have a
tear of the lateral cartilage, the coronary ligaments that hold it, or inflammation of the IT band, all of which call for different treatment.
Good luck. Bruce Weary
