Re: [RC] equine penile amputation for cancer - Barbara McCrary

If the Ice pony has "pre-cancerous lesions", could they be treated with liquid nitrogen spray, just as the pre-cancerous lesions on human faces and hands are treated?

Haven't dealt with amputation... but similiar condition to think about....

Had a client horse (deceased now) that was a hermaphrodite. He did not have a penis but urinated out from his sheath. Because of this, he could not control the "stream" and it sprayed all over his belly and back of his front legs. Poor thing had miserable scald (no hair, sores & ooze) from this constantly. :-(

Help, please, if you've heard anything about this.

We have a 20 yr old Icelandic gelding (Baldur) that has failed
various topical & oral chemo treatments for pre-cancerous penile
lesions. This Ice pony has particular value (along with his Icey
buddy "Foxy") as a favorite therapy horse at our local Ride and Shine
Equine Assisted Therapy program here in the Placerville area, where
he has happily been assisting his "patients" for the past 4 years.

So far, as far as I've been able to discover, the success rate
following this surgery ranges from 30% to 60% survival longer that 18
months.

If you know anything about this, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!
