Re: [RC] Mixing Electrolytes With... (and a general electrolyte questiontoo) - vccfarms

While on the west coast I gave electrolytes the night before, morning of, lunch stop and at the completion.  It worked very well with no metabolic issues.  I tried that here on the east coast and at our last 50, I knew at 30 miles something wasn't right.  The vet did blood work and said I need to be electrolyting every 1 to 2 hours on the east coast.  I am a heavyweight and my gelding is heavily muscled, so he works hard and sweats a lot.  He could be in better condition, but he is not bad.

Now I have your same question how much?  I would prefer to mix my own with the regular and lite salt along with a Calcium Carbonate source.

Subject: [RC] Mixing Electrolytes With... (and a general electrolyte question too)

Ok, I tried just going through the archives, but there were too many results =P  The main thing I am wondering is what people have found to mix electrolytes with that horses don't seem to mind as much?  Or even maybe like?  lol...  What do you mix it with, and what are the proportions?  Thanks!

Also, I have been reading a lot about electrolytes in general, and am in agreement with maybe people are using them as a "fix-all", using them more often than necessary because of all the hype about their "necessity", etc...  How do I figure out how much my horse needs, or that she's not getting enough?  My horse has a great appetite, and eats throughout the ride really easily (though our first 50, she didn't want any of her own grain or beet pulp or anything, but ate grass, hay, and other horse's offered meals).  She is also a good drinker in general, drinks a ton when she's thirsty, but does not always drink before she gets to that point.

I just want to try to figure all of this stuff out as I head into our first full season of 50s, and anticipate trying to conquer some hot rides (she's 1/2 QH, so it's more of an issue with her).  Thanks!
