[RC] used truck recommendation - Mary Krauss

My 2000 Chevy 2500HD 4wd truck is dying by degrees. Just this month we've have to pay 3K in repairs.... So, we may start looking at used diesels. Any thoughts?

We pull an older 36 ft Trails West steel gooseneck stock trailer, extra tall and extra wide. It's very heavy by itself and often carries three horses in a two box-stall configuration. (We tie two in the front box and let the other wander free in the back box.) The front third of the trailer is set up as a modest living quarters/tack room with a water tank and lots of gear.

Our Chevy handles the load ok, though I suspect we are a bit underpowered for the size of the trailer.

Here are a few of my concerns: 1) love the Chevy but dislike that the transmission lurched from the day we bought it new. 2) I like gas because it is quiet and doesn't smell but hear that diesels have more stopping power--is this true? 3) the truck has to be a passenger car for our 5-person family when it isn't pulling the trailer so 4 doors and fairly comfy back seats matter at least a little.

Any thoughts (or even leads!) would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
Mary K.
