[RC] Correcting an absent-minded leader - Ruth Maher - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLF

I have the exact same problem walking my mare when she's "overly aware"
or excited. While holding the lead with your right hand a few inches
under his chin, keep a 12" - 18" inch excess length of rope hanging from
your left hand and just swing it around as you're walking (twirling).
Not near your horse's face necessarily, just on your left to remind your
horse that you are the "lead horse" and you're effectively wringing your
tail as a reminder for him he's in your space.

Ruth wrote: So my new horse is home as of Saturday, and I took him out
for a walk this evening so we could spend some time together. The entire
time, he tried to walk ahead of me gawking at everything. So, of course,
I tried to slow him down.....
